Scotland to Canada: A Performance Collaboration

I’m excited to be working in a new way on a project with dancer Jocelyn Mah, and the music of Alex Paton. With 2020 has come new challenges and new ways of working, and choreographing over Zoom is something I never thought I would be doing!

With Catastrophic Consequences is originally a collaboration between myself and Alex Paton, however this version of the work is a solo on Jocelyn Mah. For more info and tickets click the link below:

The work is a structured improvisation with a specific movement score set to Alex’s composition. The question we’ve been investigating is how do different people interpret the same music in their own way?

I wrote out my score in as much detail as possible, and sent it over to Jocelyn. Since then we have had multiple online rehearsals which has involved Jocelyn dancing in her living room and me choreographing and guiding her through the score from my bedroom floor.

Certain roadblocks have created extra challenges such as the quality of music when playing it over zoom, and the big one, lack of space - but despite those challenges it’s a really exciting opportunity for me to choreograph and work with another dancer which I haven’t had the opportunity to do in months and months. It’s also an incredibly exciting opportunity to be able to premiere my choreography in Canada for the first time!

Here’s a little snippet from rehearsal that Jocelyn filmed and sent over to me.
