With Catastrophic Consequences: Remixed
With Catastrophic Consequences: Remixed explores the nuances of the relationship between music and dance, using structured improvisation as a channel to ‘saying yes’ to new possibilities. The work was originally conceived by dancer/choreographer Taylor Han and musician/composer Alex Paton in 2019.
This iteration of the work sees dancer Jocelyn Mah explore her unique embodiment of music composed by Alex Paton. With a background in vernacular jazz and contemporary dance technique, Jocelyn improvises through a movement score created in collaboration with Taylor Han. Through online rehearsal and across continents; Dundee, Scotland to Calgary, Canada, together they’re interested in asking the questions; How does a different body, a different person, interpret music in their own way? How do we navigate the challenges of rehearsing online, and what new possibilities might present themselves within this new format?
The work aims to highlight the rich and everchanging relationship between music and dance while playfully exploring the joy that working collaboratively can bring.
This piece was performed as part of Springboard’s containR fest, in Calgary, Canada on the 12th and 13th September.
